The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), translated as the Chinese Proficiency Test, is the standardized test of Standard Chinese (a type of Mandarin Chinese) language proficiency of Mainland China for non-native speakers such as foreign students and overseas Chinese. The test is administered by Hanban, an agency of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.
HSK provides a series of courses (study books) for non-native Chinese speakers to certify their knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. It consists of six independent courses at different levels. Depending on which level you can pass, HSK certifies your proficiency accordingly, from HSK1 to HSK6. And since HSK is widely recognized and accepted, your Chinese skills can be quickly evaluated every time you refer to your HSK level.

After HSK1, students can understand and use simple words and phrases. They can learn communicative expressions such as greeting, expressing time and weather, and simple self-introduction.
HSK (Level 1) completion provides the students with daily Chinese application ability, which corresponds to Level 1 of the Chinese Language Proficiency Standards for International Students and Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Candidates who have passed HSK (Level 1) can understand and use some very simple Chinese words and sentences, meet specific communication needs, and have the ability to further learn Chinese.
HSK1 is a relatively easy step. The learners are not too occupied with grammar and language structure yet at this level. The coursemates will be mainly required to learn isolated words, phrases, and pre-packaged sentences.
The study book is composed of 15 lessons. Except for Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 focusing on pronunciation, each of the rest lessons centres on a topic in three situations, each with 1-2 dialogues. Each lesson teaches 10-15 new words and presents notes on 3-4 language points. The book was written strictly abiding by the 150 new words required in the Syllabus. The whole level is usually taught in around 35 - 45 hours. Each lesson normally took 2 - 3 hours.
After HSK2, students can communicate simply and directly on daily topics they are familiar with.
HSK2 is generally considered an easy accessible level. It corresponds to basic Chinese skills. At this level, you’re not fully occupied with Chinese characters yet as Pinyin is provided all along with characters of the whole level.
HSK2 is composed of 15 lessons. Each lesson teaches an average of 10-15 new words and 2-4 language points based on one task-based theme in four situations. The study book was written abiding by the 300 new words required in the Syllabus of Level 2, including the 150 words of Level 1. The whole level is usually taught in around 40 - 45 hours. Each lesson typically took 2 - 3 hours.
After the course, the students can conduct essential communication in daily life, study and work. They can manage most communication when travelling in China. While HSK 1 and HSK 2 correspond to very basic Chinese skills. HSK 3 and HSK 4 introduce more sophisticated knowledge of Chinese.
HSK3 course consists of 20 lessons. Each lesson is divided into four parts, with an average of 12 to 21 new words and 2 to 3 language points in each lesson. The book was written abiding by the 600 new words required in the Syllabus of Level 3, including the 300 words of previous levels. The whole level is usually taught in around 60-80 hours. The recommended teaching time for each class is 3 - 4 hours.
After the course, the students can discuss a relatively wide range of topics in Chinese and can communicate with native Chinese speakers fluently in everyday situations.
HSK 4 provides the learners with the vocabulary needed to be wide enough to meet all their needs when dealing with familiar matters and points of personal interest, whether it’s at work, at home, or in a social gathering.
The HSK4 is divided into volumes 1 and 2, with a total of 20 lessons. The teaching materials cover 600 new words included in the HSK Level 4 syllabus and 1200 in total (all levels). The average number of new words in each lesson is about 30, and there are 5 language point annotations. The duration of a lesson is 5 to 6 hours. The whole level of studying usually takes around 100 - 120 hours.
After the level, the students can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, watch Chinese films and TVs, and can write and deliver a whole speech. HSK 5 and HSK 6 serve as indicators of high proficiency and fluency in Chinese. Students having HSK 5 level are comfortable in reading and writing more complex things down in Chinese. For example, Chinese universities use HSK as a standard metric for students Chinese proficiency. To make sure they can handle the course load, something between HSK 5 and HSK 6 is usually required to get admitted to an academic program based on Chinese.
The HSK5 is divided into Volume 1 and Volume 2, with a total of 36 lessons and 12 units. The textbook covers 1,300 new words included in the HSK Level 5 syllabus and some super-syllabus words (marked in the textbook). The recommended teaching time for each class is 4 to 6 hours. The whole level is usually taught in around 200 hours. We recommend HSK5 be studied in 1-on-1 lessons.
After the level, students can easily understand what they read and hear and express themselves fluently in written and spoken Chinese. HSK 6 is the last stretch of the HSK tests, and is, with a doubt, the hardest one in this system. To pass the HSK 6 level, learners should be at ease with most aspects of Chinese in personal, academic, or professional settings. This highest level roughly corresponds to a middle school (6-7th grade) Chinese language in China.
The HSK6 is divided into volume 1 and volume 2, with a total of 40 lessons. The textbook covers 2,500 new words included in the HSK (Level 6) syllabus. The recommended teaching time for each class is 6-8 hours. Covering the HSK6 level takes around 300 hours. We recommend HSK6 be studied in 1-on-1 lessons.
